History of Lawnmowers
An engineer from England (Stroud, in Gloucestershire) Edwin beard budding in 1830 invented the lawnmower after seeing a machine that was mounted on a bent trim cloth using a cutting cylinder in a local cloth mill to smoother the finish after weaving he landed on the idea of a lawnmower. With his partnership with a local engineer john ferrabee they thought of a cylindrical bladed structure that could be used to cut grass in the fields and hence together they made the lawnmowers in Stroud at a factory.
They made these machines with the help of large rear rollers fitted with cutting cylinders all of it made of cast iron the wheels were also made of cast iron and they transmitted the main power to the cylinder used for cutting they transmitted power through the rear rollers. To our surprise these machines were very much similar to today’s machines.
Both budding and ferrabee allowed other companies to build their own mowers under the licence provided by budding and ferrabee there were few companies that started with it and became successful one of them which were hugely successful was Ransomes of Ipswich this company started making mowers as early as in 1832. This company grew time and again and made more mowers than anyone else hence today they are world’s largest lawn care equipment manufacturers.
As time passed budding’s early patents had lost the ground and in around 1850’s other companies were able to make their own machines. After a few years mowers like Silens Messor were introduced in the market by Thomas green and the son of Leeds these mowers created comparably less noise as they used chains to transmit power from rear wheel to the cylinder but they were slightly expensive. Nearly around the same time gear or chain drive mowers were introduced which also came with an optional grass collecting box they were introduced by a few companies such as Alexander Shanks of Arbroath. These mowers gave new dimensions to the innovations of mowers hence they were used and modifying in the 20th century also.
The side-wheeled machines lists for the next major innovation in the field of lawnmowers these were more famous in places with coarse grass such as North America but these mowers were basically made in England. These didn’t have metal rollers so they were light and quite handy to use which helped in their popularity.
1n 1890s the motorized mowers entered the market and in 1900 to the first world war the petrol mowers took the market lead. And soon after the First World War the lawnmower market saw a tremendous jump. Atco became the most successful company of that time.
To our surprise the seemingly modern ideas were used and tried in 1920s or 30s but they were not much famous at that time so the coming times such as of 1940 and 50s led to light and small engines yet powerful in functioning.
Till 1960s the lawnmowers technology had increased greatly and so was the introduction of plastic that was affecting the cost of the mowers which helped the industry to grow day to day even till now.
